Elite Performance Formula

    Every coach wants to win more games. Every coach would love to lift a championship trophy. There are coaches taking new jobs every year in pursuit of being at a place they feel gives them a better opportunity to do that.
    Every leader wants their organization to be successful. They want to exceed expectations. They want to drive revenue. They want to increase sales. They want to meet and exceed their KPIs.
    The bottom line is that everyone wants to win.
    Let's establish one key thing. It takes talent to win. I do not want the message today to get lost because people are hung up on talent. Yes, talent matters. Yes, more talent increases your odds.
I am going to give you a formula today that you can use to improve your results in anything you do. You can improve your results as a coach, a teacher, a trainer, a product manager, a sales leader, a founder... basically any position of leadership.
    As a leader, whether you coach a team, or you lead a business organization, you are tasked with goals. These are often an arbitrary number. Let's call those our Expectations. We expect to win a conference or district championship. We expect to win a state title. We expect to make the playoffs.
We expect to bring in $54 million in revenue this fiscal year. We expect sales to increase 8.2% in Q2. We expect our churn to be reduced by 5%.
    Once we have our expectations, we have to determine what the process will be to meet or exceed our expectations, and what system or systems will we use to align to our processes?
    This is where our Standards come into play. Everyone wants to be a part of the outcome, but not everyone wants to do the work required to achieve the desired outcome.
    What standards are you going to put into place? What are the behaviors and habits that people need to perform to lead your team to achieve the expectations? Your standards are going to become the process to achieve your goals.
    Now we get to the most important piece. This is vital. Setting High Expectations is important. Having Standards is important.

    But to truly be able to achieve at a high level, you need to have a system of Accountability to Your Standards. This system must align with your expectations.
    The level of accountability you have must align to the expectations you set.
Your performance and the performance of your team will rise or fall to the level of accountability you keep to your standards. If you set high standards to achieve high expectations, but you have low accountability to those standards, your performance will not align with your expectations.
    When someone does not meet the standards, what do you do? You can ignore it. You can just let it go. That is what many average leaders do. They ignore the standard.
    An elite leader asks a simple question. Was it a lack of caring, or a lack of clarity? Did they not perform at the level we set because they don't care? Or did they fail to perform because they weren't clear on the standard? These situations will be handled differently.
    This is were level of support comes in. Have we prepared our people through our training to exceed the standards we have set to meet our expectations?Do you need to retrain them? Do we need to coach them? What was the area they did not perform to our standards? And finally, if we retrain them, can they perform at that level?
    If not, we might need to let them go. If it is a lack of caring, is there something underlying that is affecting their performance? Will the investment we need to make as leaders bring them into alignment with our systems, or will the return not meet the investment?
    If we have high expectations but low standards, we will be disappointed. If we have high expectations and high standards, but low accountability, we will not be successful. We will be disappointed. IF we have low executions, it is impossible to have high performance on a consistent basis.
    The formula is simple. We need to set high expectations, align our standards to meet those expectations, have systems in place to hold people accountable to the standards, and then provide a high level of support to prepare people to perform to our expectations.

    Are you willing to confront when people do not meet your standard? Will you have difficult conversations? Most people are not wiling to do this because it's hard, and they are addicted to average. They aren't willing to be uncomfortable.

    What behaviors need to be confronted for the team you lead to improve their performance? Have you clearly laid out your standards? Have you trained your people?

A big piece of the puzzle is preparation. You have to do a great job of game planning for your opponents which will greatly improve your play calling ability. Books Every Defensive Coordinator Should Read

There were some books that had a big impact on me coaching on the defensive side of the ball. Early in my career I was an OC who also coached our secondary. Like many of you, we coached both sides of the ball. I then coached linebackers, then defensive line. This helped greatly when I switched to the dark side to coach defense as I had coached all three levels. These are a few of the books I found beneficial. 

Coaching Football's 46 Defense - Rex Ryan

One of the first books I was introduced to was Rex Ryan's book on coaching the 46 defense. This is a great book to build knowledge of the 46. We use the principles of this book in our defense. 

Coaching The Under Front Defense - Jerry Gordon

Jerry Gordon wrote an awesome book on the under front defense. Jerry passed away recently, but his book will live on, leaving his legacy. This is an outstanding book that will give you great incite into building your defense, regardless of the structure you use. 

Complete Linebacking - Lou Tepper

Lou Tepper was a great ball coach, and he wrote the bible of linebacking. This book helped me to understand second level play and how to maximize the success of your linebackers as you build your defense. 

Football's Eagle and Stack Defenses - Ron Vanderlinden

One of the best defensive minds of the 80's and 90's wrote a tremendous book on the eagle and stack defenses. Ron Vanderlinden was a part of national championships and wrote a great book that will provide you with some outstanding guidance on being great on defense. 

Match Quarters - Cody Alexander

Finally, is my man Cody Alexander. He is a guru on playing quarters coverage, and his book Match Quarters is a must read for every coach. I highly recommend. 

Each of these books will help you to grow as a defensive coach. There are also a lot of great videos you can get, but nothing matches the knowledge you can gain from reading a book from an expert.

I was going through my books looking for something to read and saw some books that others might benefit from. These are books that have impacted my career as an OC. This list is not exhaustive, as there are many other books that really good. I hope you might find one or two of these helpful as you grow as a coach. 

What is Open - Dub Maddox

What is Open is a great book by Dub Maddox. Dub's R4 system gives you a method of communicating your pass game. It gives you a systematic process and universal approach to your game planning and play calling in your pass game. This helps you to "accelerate" decision making on the field. 

Adapt or Die - Dub Maddox

Dub's follow up to What is Open is Adapt or Die. This will give you essentially a field manual for your pass game, tying together your drops, releases and routes. This will help you drastically improve your pass game. 

Inside the Pocket - Bobby Petrino

Bobby Petrino is one of the top offensive minds in football, and Inside the Pocket is a comprehensive guide to the pass game and using the X's and O's on the field. This is like taking a college course in the pass game. Where Dub Maddox's books give you a way to communicate and accelerate decisions, Petrino's book walks you through a variety of pass concepts. 

Go-Go Offense - Brennan Marion

Brennan Marion is now the OC at Colorado, and early in his career he wrote the Go-Go Offense. Whether you run the Go-Go Offense or not, this will give you some great ideas and concepts you can incorporate within your own system. Brennan is an outside the box thinker who is one of the great innovators of offensive football. 

The Bunch Attack - Andrew Coverdale

This is a classic that has impacted thousands of coaches in football. The Bunch Attack by Andrew Coverdale will give you several ideas you can incorporate into your offensive system. This is a must have for your coaching library. 

Complete Offensive Line - Rick Trickett

Rick Tricket is a great football coach and this is a must have for offensive line coaches and offensive coordinators. If you are new to line play, or you want to learn more about line play, this book is a must have to get a great understanding of the offensive line. 

The Delaware Wing-T: An Order of Football - Tubby Raymond

This is a very difficult book to find, but I highly recommend finding a way to purchase it. Tubby Raymond wrote the bible on the Delaware Wing-T, which is run by teams across the country. Many coaches have taken parts of Tubby's offensive system and incorporated them into their own. 

The Evolution of the Wing-T Offense - Ed Sadloch

Legendary New Jersey Coach Ed Sadloch just released his book on the evolution of the wing-T. Coach Sadloch is one of the most knowledgeable coaches in football, and I highly recommend his book. 

Run And Shoot Football - Glenn "Tiger" Ellison

Early in my career I read the Tiger Ellison's book. This will give you an education on the pass game based in the Run and Shoot. I highly recommend this book to expand your knowledge of offensive football and the pass game! 

Football Coach's Complete Offensive Playbook - Homer Smith

This is one of the first books I read when I started coaching football. The head coach I worked for, David Diaz, had this book on his bookshelf. Homer Smith takes you through the evolution of offensive football and how offenses adapted to defenses. I highly recommend every coach who wants to learn ball to read this book.

Seven Books Every Coach Should Read

Coaches often ask for book recommendations, and there are some great books that every coach should read. These are books that I read at different times in my coaching career, and still look back through today. 

These aren’t just great books for coaches. These are great books for anyone who is a leader. These are listed in the order I read them, but all of them are valuable in different ways. There are really eight books here, but we are counting two books as one. I had also already published the title when I added the eighth.

Winning Everyday by Lou Holtz.  

The first book I read as a first-year coach was Winning Everyday.  Holtz gave some great life lessons that were not only beneficial to me as a coach, but I used them as a human. 

Bill Walsh- The Score Takes Care of Itself 

If you want a book focused on what setting standards off the field. If you do things right in your daily habits, everything will work out as it should on the scoreboard. This was a great book as a complement to Finding the Winning Edge. You can find copies of Finding the Winning Edge on Amazing, but the cost is often very high. I would recommend every football coach read it if you can get a copy. It is worth every penny. 

Nick Saban- How Good Do You Want to Be 

Nick Saban’s book “How Good Do You Want to Be is written in typical Saban voice. This takes you inside how he built LSU and Alabama into championship programs. This book taught me the importance of setting high expectations and holding yourself and others accountable to the standard. 

Pete Carroll - Win Forever 

Always Compete 

Next I read Pete Carroll’s Always Compete and Win Forever. These are both top-notch books that give you insight into how Carroll developed the USC program. I love Win Forever, but it is hard to find and that is why I included Always Compete. 

Always Compete has many of the same principles, but they were much more refined when we wrote Win Forever. Win Forever gives you a bluepinrt for building a championship program. 

We are counting these as one book, so don't @ me on the math! 

Coach K: Leading With the Heart 

Coach K is a legendary basketball coach, but his book Leading from the Heart is a great book for coaches to read. He gives you insight into how you can be a transformational coach. 

Called to Coach - Bobby Bowden

And perhaps my favorite is Called To Coach by Bobby Bowden. Coach Bowden takes you through his journey as a coach and how he built the program at Florida State. He talks a lot about how important it is to be a servant leader. 

These are very good books I highly recommend to anyone who is a coach or leader. I recommend these books because everyone in a leadership position can take something from these books and use them in their own situations. These books made an impact on me, and I hope they will benefit you in your coaching journey. 

Football Scouting Methods- Steve Belichick

This is the bible of scouting opponents written by Bill's dad. When people ask me where I learned how to scout an opponent, it is this book. This book gives you everything you need to build a foundation of scouting teams you will play. The theories and concepts in this book are transferable to today's game and will help make you a better coach.
